Metallic Abrasives

Chilled Iron
Chilled Iron Grit is sharp, angular, hard and brittle. On impact the particles break down to form fresh sharp edges contributing to their rapid cleaning and etching properties. Chilled iron grits are especially suited for air blast applications requiring an aggressive cutting rate. Chilled iron grits produce a very angular profile which is ideally suited to surface preparation prior the application of metal spray coatings. Chilled Iron can also be used as a high-density aggregate in ballast applications and for radiation shielding.

Typical BSS Size Ranges:

G07 0.20 – 0.40

Steel Grit
Steel grit is manufactured from high carbon cast steel shots crushed to granular grit form and subsequently tempered to three different hardnesses. Steel grit is available in standard grades conforming to SAE specifications. Steel grit has extensive applications in general industry for scale, rust and other surface contaminant removal, deburring or deflashing of castings and cleaning of moulds. Steel grit is also used for creating etched profiles prior to painting or coating.

Standard Sizes as per SAE Specifications:

G80 (0.125 to 0.425 mm)       G18 (1.00 to 1.4 mm)
G50 (0.300 to 0.710 mm) G16 (1.18 to 1.70 mm)
G40 (0.425 to 1.00 mm) G14 (10.4 to 2.0 mm)
G25 (0.710 to 1.18 mm) G12 (1.7 to 2.36 mm)

Intermediate 54 – 60 HRc
High: >60 HRc

Steel Shot
Steel shot is manufactured from high carbon cast steel tempered to achieve a product of uniform hardness, density and microstructure. Steel shot is available in standard grades conforming to SAE specification and typical hardness of 40 – 50 HRc. Steel shot is recyclable and has wide applications in the general industry for scale and other surface contamination removal, cleaning of metal castings, shot-peening.
